What makes a sound white noise?

White noise has equal power per unit of frequency. Because higher octaves cover a wider frequency range, it can sound bright or hissy. A fan or a rain recording may have a similar shushing character, but neither is necessarily true white noise. The reference sample here lets you hear the difference before choosing what you like.

White noise, brown noise or rain?

These sounds have distinct characters. There is no single best option for everyone.

White noise

A bright, even hiss. Try this when you like a steady sound with prominent higher frequencies.

Brown noise

A deeper rumble with much less high-frequency energy. Often described as softer or bassier, though that is a listening preference.

Rain

A natural texture with small variations in droplets and intensity. The sound changes with the surface and weather.

Start quietly and compare fairly

Begin at a low volume. Adjust each sound to a similarly comfortable perceived level before comparing; louder should not automatically feel better. Keep alarms and important sounds audible. If white noise feels too sharp, try a lower-frequency texture or the natural rain and ocean recordings available in SleepBetter.

A few common questions.

Does white noise guarantee better sleep?

No. Responses differ, and research does not establish that continuous noise improves sleep for everyone. Use your own comfort as a guide and stop if it makes resting harder.

Is this white noise sample a SleepBetter recording?

This is a standalone reference sample for comparing sound textures. For a preview of the app recordings, listen to Rain or Ocean Waves.

How is the website player different from the iPhone app?

This page generates a continuous noise background in your browser. White and brown noise are not in the SleepBetter app. The app offers rain, ocean waves, nature and no-talking ASMR recordings, with a fade-out sleep timer, favorites and lock-screen controls.

A little less noise. A little more rest.
